Kyle Petroski, Engineering Manager at Shopify

I had the pleasure of working with and directly managing Jack up until widespread layoffs hit at Shopify. Jack was initially moved to my team as a result of some restructuring from shifting priorities. Jack had been working as a FED on his previous team, and upon joining my team switched disciplines to BED.

Jack is a talented, multi-dimensional individual who always has deep, insightful thoughts. He is very open communicator in all settings – offering up a wide lens into his thought process when solving a problem together, and tirelessly working to gather input or reviews cross-functionally on a project. Jack is always looking for ways to level up his talents, and has spent time in numerous different stacks throughout his career. Our 1:1s were always refreshing, with Jack’s strong sense of empathy and easy-going attitude.

Jack had volunteered to and claimed ownership of an observability and instrumentation project in our domain; with an ultimate goal of shortening the length of time it takes to diagnose/triage an inbounded issue. Jack worked with Data Science to centralize the logging from the Discounts platform; a piece of the massive Shopify ecosystem that had both new components to it, and also a heap of legacy code that was not well documented, nor well optimized. Jack also built out a dashboard that you could view compiled results for all the different areas of Discounts based on certain tokens. He even prototyped a parent observer for Discounts to simplify and make further instrumentation and metric gathering even easier.

Overall, Jack would be a great addition to your team – both as senior+ IC or as a people manager. I will sorely miss working with him.
